England vs Afghanistan on June 18

All teams have been trying to figure out how the current England side can be broken down, as of now in the tournament only Pakistan did that job with a tinge of luck on their favour. If they bat first, they place a mountain to climb and if they bat second, any total seems gettable, in simple, they seem invincible. Of all the current teams in the ongoing World Cup, going by recent form, Afghanistan is the last team anyone would want to bet on to beat this stellar juggernaut. With due respect to the Asian side, the hosts are just too strong for most teams and it is something no one can hide from. Gulbadin Naib and his troops are hitting new lows with every passing game and it seems likely that they might not win even a single game. All they can do is a bank on their strengths, which is their bowling attack and expect for things to work in their favour. As it stands, it doesn’t seem like they will be garnering a positive result from this game.

Best economical pickChris Woakes chipped in with a valuable contribution with the bat during adverse conditions and ensured England didn’t feel the absence of the injured batters. He will be crucial once again in both departments. He just picked up four wickets in the tournament but has been bowling in good channels.

Top captains & vice captains – Arguably England's best player of spin bowling, Joe Root might be called up against Afghanistan to tackle their quality spinners. Considering that the same pitch will be used for the game between England and Afghanistan, Root might have a sizeable role to play. He has also been in a surreal form in the World Cup so far. England would like Jonny Bairstow to start converting his starts and he won't get a better opponent than Afghanistan. Bairstow was at utmost ease against Afghanistan in the warm up match before the World Cup began. He raced on to 39 in no time but had to return back to the pavilion in an unfortunate manner. He even looked solid against the Afghan spinners. Bairstow will look to take all this into account and post a huge score against Afghanistan

Smart pick – One of England's trump cards, Jofra Archer has given a completely different dimension to the team's bowling attack. He has the tendency to trick the batsmen with his pace as not many expect him to bowl 145 kph with his sedate yet rhythmic run-up. This factor will yet again be on show against Afghanistan.

Cautions Pick – Their most effective batsman in the lineup, Rahmat Shah scored just 8 runs in the last three games. He has not been in fine touch since landing in England which cost the Afghans a lot.

My XI – Joe Root (Captain), Jonny Bairstow (Vice-Captain), Chris Woakes, Jofra Archer, Rashid Khan, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Mohammad Nabi, Hazratullah Zazai, Jos Buttler, Eoin Morgan, Najibullah Zadran
